Overview:
Half-day private tour of the scenic region between the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong, with its natural beauty and quaint villages.
Description:
The best scenic shore excursion in Hong Kong
Pick up from your Hong Kong hotel and drive to the Yuen Yuen Institute. A very special place, founded in 1950 to uphold the principles of China’s 3 great religions, Buddhism, Confucianism and Toaism, the institute’s main building is a replica of Beijing’s Temple of Heaven with statues that represent the Chinese calendar, and you burn incense in front of the one symbolising your own particular birth year. There are other pavilions, temples, gardens and ponds throughout the grounds. Continue to Hong Kong’s highest point, Mount TaiMo Shan. TaiMo Shan means ‘big hat mountain’, and it’s over a thousand feet high. There are fantastic views of the islands and bays when the skies are clear, and when not, then the mountain is often wreathed in romantic clouds or mist! There are streams and volcanic boulders, regenerating woodland, and wildlife such as barking deer, civets and sunbirds. Drive on to a quaint walled village, Fanling, which was built in the days when bands of marauding pirates could slaughter whole families in the remote inlets and bays of present-day Hong Kong. Even wild tigers used to roam the region, and so extended families or clans protected themselves by building villages surrounded by thick walls, sometimes complete with a moat or cannon towers. We drive along Luk Keng Road through one of the region’s more scenic and rural areas, where the Hakka people live, emigres from the north of China many centuries ago. Traditionally the Hakka used to plant rice and cultivate pearls in the large freshwater marshes here which are nowadays conservation areas because of the black-faced spoonbills, white egrets, night herons and other birds which come here and, according to local superstition, bring good luck! Take a photo of Brides Pool Falls in Plover Cove Country Park, a beautiful waterfall, and continue to Sam Mun Tsai, a picturesque fishing village before returning to the city and your hotel.
