1) Mostar takes its name after a historical structure – Stari Most simply meaning The Old Bridge.
2) The famous bridge on the River Neretva was designed by the Ottoman (Turkish) architect Mimar Hayruddin on the orders of Suleiman the Magnificent.
3) Story goes that the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire promised to kill Mimar Hayruddin if the bridge collapsed after the wooden supports were removed. Scared Hayruddin started to dig his own grave on the day the supports were removed but the bridge stood for 429 years, a testament to its excellent design and construction.
4) It took nine years to complete and the Bridge stood up for 429 years until conflict in Bosnia and Herzegovina when was destroyed. In 2004 the reconstructed bridge was re-opened.
5) The Bridge became a World Heritage site during the twentieth century.
6) The city is famously divided by the Neretva River, with a vibrant community of Bosniaks and Croats occupying either side of this city.
7) According to the unwritten Ottoman (Turkish) rule, the town was organized into two distinct areas: čaršija, the crafts and commercial centre of the settlement, and mahala or a residential area which could be seen today.
